FROM MR D's SCOUTMASTER MINUTE 6-10-10 COURT OF HONOR
This night brings us to a kind of crossroads with our Troop and I would like to take a moment as I reflect back on the years that brought us here… to this moment and this time.
In 2003 we re-started Troop 305; 18 Webelos from the CPHS class of 2010 crossed over… more boys joined us from Troop 507 and then more joined as new scouts of that group, and made it their own.
Our three mc’s of this court of honor are those that remain; Jimmy, Brian, Nick.
Their experience as scouts was much different than the rest of the scouts who sit here with us tonight. They did not have the senior scouts to lead and guide them but instead a bunch of adults who were learning themselves.
We adults had to learn to “step away from the spatula” and let these scouts make mistakes and learn by doing.
Despite that… or maybe because of that, we’ve had an amazing seven years.
From DC to Boston , Pennsylvania to Florida , they have run rapids, scaled 60 foot cliffs, traversed the COPE courses, hiked cities, mountains and woods, paddled rivers and slept under the stars.
They did all of this with good grace and humor.
These scouts have served this troop, they have served scouting, they have served our community at large and they have served all of you here tonight.
Their most recent campout was last weekend in service to others through the Order of the Arrow.
This is their last Court of Honor as scouts… they are all aging out and moving on to become Assistant Scoutmasters with our Troop and continue to serve.
I look out at the boys who are staying on and I charge all of you to this challenge…
each and every one of you take advantage of our program, make it your own, lead as these boys have led, serve as they have served, and experience everything that is possible within scouting.
I hope to stand here in the years to come and be as proud of you all as I am of these three young men.
